I am a landscape photographer traveling to our wonderful national parks and other public lands. I am based out of Folsom, California, USA. I like to get a dreamlike or otherworldly look to my photographs.
My goal as an artist is to get the same feeling I had when visiting museums in my youth. I spent many vacations visiting museums and lived in New York City for several years where I visited the many museums there. Paintings were my particular interest.
My medium is photography. Being a highly technical person, the technicality of photography suits me well. As an artist, I use postprocessing to get the look I want. Photography is more than documenting the facts for me. However, I do not go completely abstract. My work is clearly photography.
When a person views any landscape photograph, they think one of two things. They think that it shows an interesting place or that the photograph has in interesting look. I want my photographs to have an interesting look. I go for a dreamlike or otherworldly look.
The look of my photographs mostly comes from having a single dominant color in different tones that sets the mood of the image. In painting, this is sometimes called tonalism. However, tonalism typically used dark neutral colors, but I do not limit myself to those colors. I will use a contrasting color sometimes to add a strong interesting element in a photograph.
My subjects come from the public lands of the United States such as the US National Park System and California State Parks. I am heavily influenced by the vast landscapes painted by the Hudson River School. I certainly take intimate photographs, but I use perspective and composition to enhance depth.
On a personal note, photography gets me out in nature. The act of traveling, hiking and discovery in search of an image is an important part of my photography although this may not be apparent in the images themselves.
In my photography, the background is just as important as the subject.
I hope you like what you see.
